Frequently Asked Questions
How does the app work?
After you download and set up the app on your smartphone, take your phone with you when you walk your dog(s). Simply press the Start Walking button and the app will keep track of your walk. When you are done with your walk, press Stop Walking or Finish depending on your device. The blue cloud, or green heart on Android, that appears next to your walk on the History screen, indicates it is successfully logged for your selected organization.
How do donations work?
Funds from each donation period are divided among shelters and rescues based on the number of people who are actively walking for each organization as seen on the Impact or Community tab of the app. The more active walkers per donation period, the more (and more often!) that organization receives donations.
What is an “active walker?”
An active walker is anyone who uses the app an average of at least once a week. So to remain an active walker for your selected organization, please use the app once a week (at the very least)!
How are the donations funded?
Our donations are funded by sponsorships and advertising, so the more people actively walking, the more money we can raise (from interested sponsors and advertisers), and the more we are therefore able to donate!
How much money did my selected shelter or rescue last receive from WoofTrax?
Reach out to your local shelter or rescue directly to inquire about how much they last received from WoofTrax.
How can I increase the amount donated to my selected organization?
The more people actively walking with the app, the greater the benefit to your selected animal organization! Here are some ways you can magnify your impact:
Shelters and rescues can use our marketing materials to tell their supporters about Walk for a Dog.
Join a challenge. Challenges on the app give you a chance to win instant donations if you have a winning walk.
What if I don’t have a dog? Can I still use the app?
Absolutely! You can walk for dogs at a shelter or rescue by choosing the “Walk for Cassie” option after enrolling in the app for the first time. Or, create your dream dog as a walking companion by adding a dog.
Does the app use any data on my phone?
The app does not use any data during a walk and only uses a small amount of data at the end of the walk to credit it to your selected organization. If you are on Wi-Fi at the end of your walk, it will not use any cellular data at all.
Is using the GPS on the app using my data plan?
GPS as a technology does not use any data, and the WoofTrax app works without data. Once a user’s phone is back in range of Wi-Fi or a cell signal, the app (on next use) will upload the previous walks to our systems.
I have a technical question about the app. Who should I contact?
First, make sure that you are using the most recent version of the app. Updating to the most recent version will solve most issues. If you are still having trouble, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with the make and model of your phone and the email address you used to register the app.
Can I walk on a treadmill, or use a stationary bike?
The WoofTrax app is designed for walking outdoors and uses GPS to track your walks. It won't show miles if you are walking indoors on a treadmill—in order to show a walk, you need to be changing location while outside.
Levels and points
Walk often to earn points and level up! Each walk greater than 2 tenths of a mile earns 10 points towards your next level. The higher your level, the more likely you are to have a winning walk and win an extra donation for your animal charity or a fun prize for yourself. Coming soon: new ways to redeem points for additional value.
Community tab and leaderboards
The Your Pack leaderboard lists everyone walking for your selected organization, first name only and the name of their dog, as well as the number of active walkers. The WoofTrax leaderboard shows the top WoofTrax walkers.
Weekly walking goal
Set a weekly walking goal, found in your profile, for yourself and your pup, to help you meet your health and wellness goals.

To add a dog, tap the 3 black bars at the top left of the screen, tap Add Dog, then fill in all the information and tap SAVE.
How do I delete a dog from the app?
We understand that sometimes dogs need to be removed from the app. To delete a dog, tap the 3 black bars at the top left of the screen, tap Edit Dog, select the dog you wish to remove, and tap the red Remove button at the very bottom of the screen. You can also choose to not have your dog show up on the Walk screen by editing the dog, and for “Remove from new activities” select NO. The dog will no longer be shown on the Walk screen, or History screen, but will remain on the list of dogs you can edit. All walks previously done with the dog will still be on the History screen.
How do I change which dog I’m walking with?
To select the dogs you want to walk with, on the Dashboard tab, tap the photos of the dogs you do NOT want to walk with. The dogs with the white circle around their photo will be included in your walk – and you will see their names listed on the Dashboard as “Walking with…”. You can also choose to have a dog show on your Dashboard but not be auto-selected for every walk by editing the dog and for “Auto-select for all activities” select NO.

To change the animal charity you are walking for, tap the 3 black bars at the top left of the screen, tap Animal Charity, then tap Change Organization. Select the State, and then the name of the new animal charity, then tap Back.
How do I update my email address on the app?
To change your email address, tap the 3 black bars at the top left of the screen, tap My Profile, replace the email address shown with your new email address and tap Update User Profile at the bottom of the screen. An email will be sent to your new email address; click the link in that email to verify your new email address.
Why are my miles different on the Dashboard and History tabs?
Your Dashboard shows the number of walks and miles for all your walks that were 2 tenths of a mile or greater. Your History shows the distance and time for ALL your walks, for the timeframe selected. All walks over 2 tenths of a mile count the same as far as winning support for your shelter or rescue.
How can I see a map of a previous walk?
You can view a map of a previous walk and also you can expand your map view of your walk. Simply go to the History screen, tap the walk you want to view, and a map card will open; to the left of the walk time you will see a small map icon in blue. Touch that to open up the pinch-able, zoom-able view of your walk. (See image.)
Do I have to share my walks?
Sharing is optional but we encourage you to do so. You can share the map of your walks, or a graphic without a map, from the History screen. Tap the History tab, tap the walk you wish to share, then tap the sharing icon, then select Map or Graphic from the top of the screen, then tap Share.
To ensure accurate walk tracking make sure you are using the latest version of the app, and be sure that you see 2 - 3 GPS bars on the Walk screen before you start your walk.
If you have additional questions about tracking your walk, please email us at email@example.com.
My app keeps saying View Active Walk?
The issue you are encountering is a rare occurrence, subsequently fixed in an update. To get your app out of the cycle of it always showing "Resume Active walk" please follow these simple steps;
Touch View Active Walk on the Dashboard - this will take you the walk screen. Or go to the Walk tab.
Touch the red stop button (app should now take you to the History screen).
Return to the Dashboard and touch View Active Walk again.
Repeat these steps 3- 4 times until the walk is properly ended for good. You will know its complete when you go to the Dashboard and it reads Start Walking Now.
Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with any additional questions that are not answered here.

How do I update my email address on the app?
Your email address is your unique identifier on the app. Currently, the only way to change your email address is to delete and reinstall the app with your new email address. While your local history will start over, any previous walks still will be credited to your selected animal organization.
I'm using an Android phone, and now the app doesn’t track my walk correctly. What should I do?
If you are experiencing difficulties with the Walk for a Dog app accurately tracking your walk, first, make sure you are using the latest version of the app. Then, try changing the Settings on your Android phone, as the Power Saving / Battery Saver feature may be interfering with Walk for a Dog’s ability to accurately track your walk. If you are using Android 6.0+, go to Settings and turn Power Saving to OFF. With the new update you have to go to Battery, tap Power Mode then High Performance. Also, check that your location services are fully enabled before you start your walk. When the Walk for a Dog app is launched, you should see the GPS icon / indicator in the status bar of the phone.
